I find the change of setting, speakers, and not being able to stop and fiddle, can give me a better idea of some of the areas that need work. I keep a notebad close by and make notes, which gives me a clear agenda for when I sit back down in front of the computer. Not to mention, its always a good idea to be checking your work on second set of speakers.

absolutely, headphones, car audio, home system, etc. I find while driving to and from work ( i have a very long commute) since i'm not purely focused on the track and fiddling with controls i tend to notice more esoteric and atmospheric things; besides the obvious gapping holes.
it's all so really nice when your schedule actually allows you the time to put something completely away for a week or so then come back to it.
