Its about the same as what you described for live. The reason why I think cubase fails in this department is the extra step in having to open the old session and save the track.

I find the change of setting, speakers, and not being able to stop and fiddle, can give me a better idea of some of the areas that need work. I keep a notebad close by and make notes, which gives me a clear agenda for when I sit back down in front of the computer. Not to mention, its always a good idea to be checking your work on second set of speakers.
absolutely, headphones, car audio, home system, etc. I find while driving to and from work ( i have a very long commute) since i'm not purely focused on the track and fiddling with controls i tend to notice more esoteric and atmospheric things; besides the obvious gapping holes.
it's all so really nice when your schedule actually allows you the time to put something completely away for a week or so then come back to it.

Agreed, can you pull out just plugins from the session data?

In C4 they added a nice preset system though which takes care of a lot of this. You can save entire plugin chains as presets so gets around the issue somewhat. That's one thing I miss from SX3 in Live is the preset system which was really easy to do in SX3. In fact C4 is worse now as it also creates more steps (although with the advantage of being able to save the racks).

To the best of my knowledge, no. But I don't know Protools super well. I use it at work for sound fx and dialog editing for television post production.

Logic is bang on when it comes to saving channel strip settings. You just can't import the midi regions and automation at the same time. My work around is to save the channel strip setting and the midi region with a corresponding name.

I've just realized the 'rack' system in Live might be a way to basically do plugin chain presets as I think you can group any plugs together and then save that, will have to look into it. And now I've got the compressor in there setup by default for sidechaining so its only seconds away hehe.
